Simply a formality

This is a real thing of beauty. The yew hedges are slow growing and easy to keep in shape. The beds can be colourful, monochromatic, full of scented shrubs like rosemary and thyme, or even full of your own veg. It can be made more child-friendly too by surrounding the lawn with shrubs and replacing the arbour with a climbing frame or swing.

The Italian job: Your own parterre in a romantic Latin setting

Why choose this style?

  • A classic Italian villa parterre which traditionally has roses, bedding plants or tulips and bulbs in the Spring. This design lends itself well to how much rejigging you want to do
  • These gardens usually have an ornate fountain so in this garden a slim rill, lit up in the evening, feeds down to the wall feature
  • For a more modern look plant decorative grasses and drifts of perennials, a trend made popular by landscape designer Piet Oudolf, the Dutch plantsman behind the High Line garden in New York
  • Or for year-round interest, and if you love pottering around, mix bulbs, perennials, roses, annuals and grasses as the seasons pass
  • This layout works well in a walled garden, with the micro-climate that can create and the walls can house extra decorative finishes, like those famous walled gardens in Italy
High impact: Are you a rose grower, are dahlias your bloom? This is the perfect frame for them
