High and dry
What is it?
A dry gravel garden using drought tolerant plants, the best example of which was made by Beth Chatto OBE, the award winning plantswoman, in Essex. She said she looked at her lawn turning brown every year, in an area of very low rainfall, and decided to try plants that could survive in those conditions. The result is a xeriscape

Why use it?
Chatto’s garden is never watered. As the British climate changes and summers heat up, this could be the answer. It adds colour and interest to a sun-baked area or driveway space that needs minimum irrigation
What to plant
Vibrant orange Eremurus and Alstroemeria, foxtail and Peruvian lilies, upstage the floating Stipa grasses and structured Yucca
